There have been and still are many brands and designs of tone arms on the market - some extraordinarily expensive. But one design that has stood the test of time as an outstanding performer for the money is the Rega RB250 - sold as various brands such as Origin Live OL1.

As good as this tonearm is, there are a number of worthwhile improvements such as Origin Live's structural modification and Vertical Tracking Angle adjusters, and the Incognito wiring upgrade. So we offer the arm here in its basic and upgraded forms.

Another classic design is the Hadcock unipivot - after being off the market for several years it is now available again due to the efforts of Len Gregory, The Cartridge Man.

The latest tubes are identified by their satin chrome finish as opposed to the black tubes in the MK1 version. I suspect the Mk III Illustrious is now the value-for-money sweet spot in the lineup, and if not the world's best, it is certainly world class. As noted, it will not appeal to the audiophiliac who is compelled to endlessly fiddle and adjust everything. Rather, it is an elegant—and addictive—solution to extracting music from vinyl. Combining the sonic virtues of both unipivot and gimbaled bearings in a fuss-free package, it should work exceedingly well with a wide variety of cartridges and turntables.
